Camaguey

Cuba Map

This is Cuba 's largest yet most sparsely populated province where major economic activities are cattle raising, sugarcane industry and production of chromate. Camaguey province is known by its cowboy culture with frequent rodeos. The Cuba 's third most popular city located in the centre of province, Camaguey , is the capital of the Camaguey province and has around 300,000 inhabitants. It is the major center of railroads, highways and air transport connecting all parts of Cuba and is important commercial town. Camaguey is one of the prettiest in Cuba , full of architectural sites, churches, picturesque nooks and crannies testifying a colonial history in this area. The area is mostly flat land with lots of palm trees. Lots of large cays and the archipelago Jardines del Reina (King's Gardens) offers some great fishing spots (favorite of Fidel Castro) are in both southern and northern parts of province.

The Camaguey province is also the home to one of the most important Cuban ports, a large blue-collar town, Nuevitas, which handles huge daily transportation. Nuevitas has about 45, 000 citizens. It grew tremendously after the revolution because a lot of industry was imported from the Soviets.

Even though both south and north coasts of Camaguey province offer some great beaches not frequently visited by tourists, most known beach resort area of Camaguey that is the popular holiday destination is Santa Lucia beach. Santa Lucia beach is 21 km long and covered with golden sand bathed by warm always quite turquoise water. The sunsets over this beach are spectacular. Santa Lucia is a great scuba diving spot since there are more than 50 different species of corals. Many all-inclusive hotels are built around Santa Lucia beach and offer all commodities any tourist will be satisfied with. All other beaches are great scuba diving sites with numerous coral reefs available for exploration especially in Cayo Romano and Cayo Sabinal, wildlife preserves with miles of intimate beaches tucked into nooks. Here you can see the ruins of San Hilario Fort and visit Columbus Lighthouse built in 1848.

Another interesting site of Camaguey province is Sierra de Cubitas, an ecological preserve with over 70 caves of great archaeological value and rich flora and fauna.

Cayo Caguamas, island lying off the southern coast, is a perfect spot for snorkeling, boat rides and swimming. La Boca, one of the loveliest spots in Cuba , is a small village 5 miles west of Santa Lucia and offers one of the most appealing coral reefs.

Another untouched and unspoiled Camaguey province spot is a Los Locos playa located 7 km from Santa Lucia beach. There are hundreds of pink flamingos in this area and other endemic species.

Visiting Camaguey province should be a promising and delightful trip to any tourist eager to feel the wild nature of Cuba and its different flavours. What one finds in any other more popular Cuban province is also found in Camaguey , be it beaches or historical worth seeing sites.
